World Cup Mascot Firm Goes Bust

The firm who paid €28m for exclusive rights to "Goleo", the 2006 World Cup mascot, have declared themselves bankrupt. Nici have blamed weak demand for their problems. The company had expected merchandise for "Goleo", who was designed by Jim Henson's company (creators of the Muppets), to have been a winner. However, it looks like the opposite has occurred. The mascot is strange looking and additionally, the lion has no link with Germany. What should have been a licence to print money has not turned out that way.

Italian ref withdrawn from the World Cup

Massimo de Santis and assistant referees Alessandro Griselli and Marco Ivaldi have been withdrawn from the list of officials to be used at the World Cup. The 3 officials are under investigation as part of the match fixing scandal with is currently underway in Italy. A replacement has not yet been named.

Steve McClaren Named As Boss

The English FA have unveiled Steve McClaren as the new manager of England. He will be given a 4 year contract starting after the World Cup when current manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson steps down. The appointment has been met with apathy by a significant number of England supporters so McClaren could face a battle from the start. His first game will be a friendly match at home on 16th August and they kick off the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign on 2nd September at home to Andorra

Terry Fit For Tournament

Chelsea defender, John Terry has announced he will be fit for the World Cup. He was injured in last weekends Chelsea v Manchester United in a challenge by Wayne Rooney. Terry left Stamford Bridge on crutches and had 11 stitches in ankle.
